Our Story

Origin

In 2014, Nigeria’s power sector underwent a momentous transformation. The government’s decision to privatize the generation and distribution value chain marked a pivotal shift, entrusting the nation’s energy future to private successor companies.
At PowerTech Advanced Business Technologies, we embraced this historic moment with a resolute commitment to redefine the power landscape. Our vision was to usher in an era driven by automation and digitization across the entire value chain. In alignment with Nigeria’s quest for energy reform, we embarked on a transformative journey. Our goal: to deliver cutting-edge processes and systems that would bring about the much-needed predictability, accuracy, accountability, and transparency. These qualities were essential for the transformation of power utilities into high-performing, profitable and sustainable organizations.

Our story is a testament to vision, innovation, and an unwavering commitment. We have tirelessly worked to create sustainable value for the Nigeria electricity supply industry, contributing to the nation’s journey toward a more efficient and reliable power sector.

Pioneering Transparency and Efficiency

With privatization came a dire need for transparency. We saw beyond the surface; we foresaw the intricate challenges and seized the opportunity to usher in a new era. Enter PowerCollect, our brainchild, a solution that not only automated meter reading but revolutionized the very core of energy accounting. The grid became more than just wires; it became a tapestry of data, meticulously woven together.

We envisioned a sector where every actor, from government bodies to distribution companies, could operate with unwavering precision. PowerCollect was the answer. It brought transparency to billing, streamlined payments, and made data more than just numbers; it made it a catalyst for change.

However, in 2015, Powercollect Made History as the First-of-its-Kind AMR and Energy Accounting Platform, which was in the wake of the power sector’s privatization in 2015, Powercollect emerged as a ground-breaking Automated Meter Reading (AMR) and energy accounting platform, setting a new standard in the industry. This innovative solution was successfully deployed across more than 1,000 bulk energy trading points, encompassing generation, transmission, and distribution, within the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI).

Powercollect played a pivotal role in managing a substantial portion of the energy landscape, overseeing the distribution of over 2,160 GWh of electricity monthly by the eleven (11) distribution successor companies. This accomplishment marked a significant milestone in the evolution of the power sector.

Empowering Precision and Efficiency

Powercollect played a pivotal role in automating data capture and streamlining the revenue lifecycle management system within NESI. This empowerment extended to both the Market Operator and participants in the electricity value chain, ensuring precise data capture, accurate billing, and efficient market settlement

One of Powercollect’s most remarkable achievements was its ability to revolutionize market settlement time. Prior to its implementation, market settlements used to take a cumbersome 25 working days. However, with Powercollect in action, this settlement process was streamlined to an astonishing 48 hours, marking a substantial leap in efficiency. Powercollect also played a pivotal role in facilitating impressive monthly market settlements. This solution contributed significantly to the achievement of market settlements exceeding a staggering 147 million dollars, demonstrating its substantial impact on the power sector’s financial landscape.

EKO Disco: A Beacon of Success

Our vision extended beyond just innovation; it embraced impact. EKO Electricity Distribution Company, the largest and most profitable disco, became our canvas. Here, we deployed PowerTrack, an evolution of our expertise, focusing on maximizing efficiency at the disco level. Through PowerTrack, we ensured that energy management wasn’t just a task; it was an art form. By metering strategically at the maximum demand level, we empowered EKO Disco to serve their community with unmatched reliability.

Powertrack – Automatic Meter Reading (AMR) Services for Utilities
PowerTrack, our robust OEM agnostic AMR platform (able to integrate seamlessly with meter OEM head end system oversees a network of more than 6,000 trading/custody transfer data points. This expansive coverage spans 11 distribution licensees and state-owned low voltage distribution assets. Impressively, it diligently tracks, monitors, and optimizes over 28.2GWh of energy on a monthly basis, showcasing the platform’s prowess in effective energy management.

Grid Analytix: Unveiling the Unseen

But we didn’t stop there. The grid, once a mystery, became an open book. With Grid Analytix, we transcended the barriers of traditional SCADA systems. At the transformer level, we monitored, analyzed, and optimized. We saw not just technical losses but opportunities, not just overload conditions but avenues for improvement. Grid Analytix became a beacon of insight, guiding us toward efficiency, one transformer at a time.

Our cutting-edge solution is a cloud-based and provides real-time visibility on network performance and quality of power across 52 strategic distribution transformers including feeder pillars and uprisers for state electricity board of Nigeria’s largest economy: Lagos state and some Independent Power Producers (IPPs).

It provides insights into the supply to and from these assets, enabling the identification of high technical losses, overload conditions, optimized network operations, failure rates in aging assets, as well as facilitating load balancing and energy optimization.
With its advanced supervisory and data acquisition capabilities, this solution serves as a versatile tool, functioning as a mini-SCADA for utilities seeking cost-effective alternatives to traditional SCADA systems.

Empowering Communities: LASG Live Energy Monitoring System

Our mission surpassed business; it touched lives. Collaborating with the Lagos State Government and Independent Power Plants, we ventured into underserved communities. ARGUS – LASG LIVE ENERGY MONITORING SYSTEMTM (Continuous Oversight and Optimization of Energy Assets for Lagos State Government)

ARGUS is the cornerstone of our continuous monitoring, analysis, and optimization of energy generation, distribution, and consumption across energy assets owned by the Lagos State Government. This comprehensive scope encompasses:

  • Over 200 low voltage distribution load points
  • 23 generating units, spanning four Independent Power Producers (IPPs)
  • Additionally, ARGUS provides real-time status updates for over 27,000 strategic streetlights throughout the metropolis.
  • Custodian of over 7GWh of electricity generated and distributed monthly.
This real-time oversight serves multiple crucial purposes:
  • Promoting security
  • Tracking availability
  • Ensuring value for money assurance
  • Upholding contractual performance standards per service level agreement between the state government and its streetlight maintenance contractors.

ARGUS stands as a vital tool in enhancing the performance and reliability of energy assets while meeting critical security and service standards for the city’s residents and stakeholders.

The long road to sustainability

Our mission extended further. In 2023, we introduced PowerTrack IPP, a comprehensive Energy Meter Data Management System tailored for Independent Power Providers (IPPs). This enterprise-scale solution provided a 360-degree perspective on customer consumption, advanced meter data analytics, and energy audit capabilities. We redefined efficiency standards in the energy sector with streamlined billing and tariff functionalities.

One of our most ambitious projects, the Remote Mini-Grid Energy Management System (RMEMS), addressed the need for remote monitoring systems. This project aimed to achieve and measure key business performance metrics while tracking the quality of energy generated and operating parameters. Our dedication to data, transparency, and accountability were once again the driving force behind this endeavor.
